Zack Snyder, one of the first names that comes to mind when it comes to fantasy, action and comic book adaptations in the world of cinema, will both write the script and direct the Escape from New York project to bring John Carpenter’s 1981 dystopian cult classic to the big screen. This move of the famous director, known for visually huge budget and epic productions such as Justice League, 300 and Watchmen, created great excitement in Hollywood backstage.

According to the first exclusive information shared by The Hollywood Reporter (THR), one of the most prestigious publications in the industry, StudioCanal, the main production company behind the project, is making final preparations to complete the giant film package. This ambitious remake, which will be presented to the global cinema market in the next few weeks, is aimed to be released directly in movie theaters around the world.

The Huge Prison on Manhattan Island and the Race Against Time The story of the original Escape from New York production takes place in a dystopian future where the crime rate is out of control and the United States has turned into a totalitarian, theocratic police state. In this dark universe, Manhattan Island, considered the heart of New York, has been surrounded by huge walls and turned into a high-security open-air prison with no guards inside.

Events begin when the plane carrying United States President John Harker is hijacked by a terrorist organization and the president crashes into the middle of this dangerous island with his escape capsule. There is only one solution left to save the president, who is taken hostage by the Duke, the prison’s most brutal gang leader: ‘Snake’ Plissken, a former Special Forces officer who was convicted of robbing the Federal Reserve bank.

This character, who became iconic with Kurt Russell, embarks on a relentless life-or-death struggle against time in exchange for his own crime being forgiven. Practical Effects and Returning to the Spirit of Dawn of the Dead The artistic interpretation that Zack Snyder will bring to this project will be much different from his recent productions focused entirely on green screen and digital visual effects (CGI). According to leaks, the successful director plans to bring the Escape from New York universe to the big screen with a much more “dirty, realistic and harsh” tone.

Snyder’s approach, which is stated to highlight real locations and physical (practical) effects instead of computer effects, reminds moviegoers of the raw and dynamic atmosphere in the legendary “Dawn of the Dead” remake, which the director signed in 2004 and received great praise. The film, which will stand out from the digital world and reflect the eeriness of the streets with physical sets, promises to present the long-awaited 80s action spirit to the fans of the genre with a modern vision.

Coming Out of Years of Production Hell and a Strong Producer Staff This big announcement shows that the most serious and concrete step has finally been taken after remake attempts that have been stuck in a production hell for many years in Hollywood and have repeatedly failed. In the past, important names in the cinema world such as the Radio Silence team, Leigh Whannell, Robert Rodriguez, Len Wiseman, Brett Ratner, Breck Eisner and Neil Cross, the creator of the “Luther” series, were interested in the project, but none of them managed to bring the film to the shooting stage.

While Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman are on the production side of the project, in partnership with StudioCanal; Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller will also contribute to the project as producers. The fact that John Carpenter, the creator of the original film and the legendary name of cinema history, is also involved in the project as executive producer is considered the biggest guarantee that the new film will remain faithful to the spirit of the original work.

The casting choices and shooting schedule of the Escape from New York project, which will change the balance in the cinema world, are already awaited with great curiosity.
