“Nergis is forgiving, she feeds on the power of love…” “Nergis is very happy in Gedelli, because for Nergis, Gedelli is an opportunity to become a family again, rather than any settlement…” “In the scene where Taylan took Nergis to the center of TVR for the first time, my heart beat so fast that they heard her voice from the microphone and were worried that something would happen to me… Then they came and changed the location of the microphone…” “There is a lot to learn from Nergis’s Forgiveness, too.
I can say that I have something… “My family was always waiting for another gold bracelet from me… I studied law, the bracelets were worn, then I cashed in some of the bracelets and invested in my dreams…” “Nergis and Taylan saved their marriage and left the past behind Gedelli…” Arzu Susantez, who has just joined the popular series Gönül Dağı, which has been followed with admiration on TRT 1 screens for 6 seasons, receives “full marks” from the audience with her successful acting.
Nergis, who moved from the big city where she lived with her two children, to the town of Gedelli, the hometown of her husband Taylan (Bülent Şakrak), to whom she gave a ‘second chance’, quickly got used to this place and the Kaya family and conquered their hearts. We talked to Arzu Susantez about Nergis and the unknowns about her artistic life. -How did you feel when you received an offer from Gönül Dağı? Have you been watching the series?
-I think surprise was the first and most prominent emotion I felt. Everything happened so fast that I found myself on the set before I had a chance to be happy about the news I received. -You play the character of Nergis, Taylan’s wife, in the series. What was your first feeling when you met the character Nergis? Nergis gives one more chance to her husband, who is going through a divorce, and moves from the big city to a small Anatolian town.
Let’s hear from you about Nergis, who has built a new life with her children and husband, in a completely different environment, with relatives she has never met before… Narcissus is my favorite flower, so before I even met the character, I felt that I would love her very much and that giving her life would be very good for me. I warmed up to Nergis more and more each day, based on what I read about her at first and what I saw as I played.
Nergis is a woman who was born into a family that did not have many opportunities, but was molded with love in this family, and who put the power she received from this love behind her and worked hard to improve and create herself. Then Taylan entered his life, and while this love brought with it opportunities that many people could not even dream of, it also opened deep wounds in him with what he took from Nergis. Despite everything, I think, under the influence of her love and even compassion for Taylan, she is a woman who has chosen to remain forgiving and nourished by the power of love, rather than being someone who can hold grudges.
In my opinion, Nergis is a woman who has a smile on her face with the attention and love shown not only to herself but also to her loved ones, who thrives on sharing and being together, who does not hold back from showing her inner compassion not only to Zümrüt and Servet, but also to Taylan, Çetin, Selma, all the cousins, the family and the townspeople, who is ready to feed everyone’s stomach and heart, who is self-sacrificing but has not sacrificed herself.
Being a very successful businesswoman in Istanbul and having a big social circle, it is a bit difficult to come to a small town in the steppe and get used to it… Has Nergis gotten used to this place and her new environment? Have there been any changes in Nergis’ personality here? Is Nergis Gedelli happy too? -We first hear Nergis from Taylan as a woman with walls, but as time passed and I got to know her, I realized that Nergis is not a woman with ambitions and corners.
For this reason, he was quickly convinced to leave behind many things, success, which some see as a career and others as a wealthy life, for a happy and peaceful life. He found himself in an environment of great love and trust in a very short time, so it was not difficult to get used to it. Moreover, since the place she came from also carries traces of her life before Taylan and the happy times in her childhood, perhaps the feeling of returning to where she started helped Nergis in this adaptation.
Nergis is very happy in Gedelli, because for Nergis, Gedelli is an opportunity to become a family again, rather than any other settlement. He is happy and at peace because he has found his own family again and is part of a new and larger family with new additions to his life. -How does Taylan, who did not receive a father’s love when he was a child and only made peace with Süleyman Kaya shortly before his death, treat his wife Nergis and their children in Gedelli?
Is Taylan, who has not fulfilled much of his fatherly responsibilities since he has not lived there before, taking care of his children and wife Nergis here? Can we say that Nergis and Taylan’s damaged marriage was saved? Taylan is a father who can take off his big man’s shirt for his children without hesitation, who holds on tightly to them and his happiness with them, and a husband who looks into Nergis’s eyes and is ready to do more than he promised in order not to lose her again.
I think they saved the marriage and left the past behind Gedelli. -Gönül Dağı is a series that broke viewing records since its first episode and made a lot of noise on social media. Do you receive messages about the series and the character you play? Do you follow the comments on Nergis? -I get nice messages, yes. There are people who welcome me and share their love as if I were a bride in a family, rather than as if I had just joined the staff, and I really like this warmth.
-To what do you attribute the popularity of Anatolian stories so much? -I can describe it in one word as sincerity and in three words as longing for feeling happy. -What kind of work do you do before portraying a character? What do you think is the most important element to make a character real? -There was no physical preparation required for the character of Nergis, nor was there time for mental preparation. As I live, I try to understand and determine its boundaries.
My priority while playing is to be aware of my feelings and not suppress them. I don’t like to play by measuring too much. -Are there any similarities between Nergis and Arzu Susantez? -There is no overwhelming similarity that makes itself felt, but of course I find something of myself in Nergis’ nourishment from love. I can say that I have a lot to learn from your forgiveness. What did shooting in the Anatolian atmosphere bring to you?
-As I go to and from the set, it’s like I’m opening and closing a shutter in my life. Shooting in a different place, far from the city life I am accustomed to, gives me the space to leave the rest of my life behind and breathe. When I’m here, I’m just here and it makes me so calm. -Do you have an interesting memory you had on the set of Gönül Dağı? Can you share it with us? -In the first weeks, I was very, very excited, especially during our scenes with Bülent.
In fact, in the scene where Taylan took Nergis to TVR’s headquarters for the first time, my heart beat so fast that they heard his voice from the microphone and were worried that something would happen to me. Then they came and moved the microphone. -You graduated from law school and have a master’s degree in IT law. What led you from law to acting? -Actually, my story is not very different from what you hear from many people.
I wanted to play for as long as I can remember, and my family was always expecting another golden bracelet from me. I studied law, the bracelets were worn, and then I cashed some of the bracelets and invested in my dreams. -Apart from acting, you also write scripts. You also wrote the script of Very Beautiful Movements 2 and acted in it. Writing funny skits is difficult. Are you funny in your normal life too? Are you tempted to write or act?
Isn’t it difficult to manage the two together? We were all writing skits in Very Beautiful Movements, and the system was based on that. It was like a school where we tried to learn by writing and playing. I think it would be a little funny to call myself funny, but we were always advised to look for the source of skits in the problems that irritated us, and I had a lot of problems that irritated me. As long as these continue, I think we will continue to laugh with life.
-What do you like to do outside of the set? What are your hobbies? We know that you follow social media very well. Do you respond to all comments? Do you think social media has both benefits and harms? -My greatest passion, which satisfies my soul the most, is to be anywhere in the world, to see with my own eyes a landscape that I have seen photographed somewhere, and to photograph it myself. I love social media, but I try not to get too caught up in it because I’m very emotional.
I see comments, but I usually don’t respond. I think it does more harm than good for people like me.
