Romania announced that it will supply Rheinmetall Lynx KF41 armored combat vehicles within the scope of the procurement program worth 2.6 billion euros. Within the framework of the program, 232 pallet platforms will be supplied through the European Union’s SAFE financing mechanism. In addition, 66 additional platforms will be included in the inventory with the national budget resources. While the proposal has been submitted for approval by the parliament, deliveries are planned to be completed within eight years after the contract is signed.
The purchase in question is considered as part of a broader modernization process carried out in line with increasing regional security concerns after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Romanian authorities are currently carrying out multiple procurement programs simultaneously, covering all force commands of the armed forces. CV90 (BAE Systems), K21 Redback (Hanwha Aerospace) and ASCOD 2 (General Dynamics European Land Systems) platforms also competed in the tender.
Lynx KF41 stands out as a modular armored vehicle designed for multiple missions. The vehicle can carry 8 personnel in addition to a crew of 3 and can reach a maximum speed of approximately 65 km/h. Equipped with the Lance 2.0 turret system and 35 mm gun, the platform allows the integration of different systems such as Spike LR2 anti-tank missiles, mobile ammunition, electronic warfare systems and unmanned aerial vehicles.
Lynx KF41 has a multi-layered armor structure that includes active, passive and reactive protection layers against threats such as anti-tank guided missiles. Officials stated that the procurement in question aims to increase the combat capability of the Romanian Land Forces and strengthen interoperability with allied forces.
