Within the scope of the Future Games Show Summer Presentation, one of the most established and respected organizations in the gaming world, Defender of the Crown, one of the cornerstones of strategy history, made a glorious comeback with its new version, completely rebuilt for modern digital platforms. Developer Black Tower Basement studio and publisher Nordcurrent Labs announced the official release date of the game “Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns”, the most current version of the legendary production, to the whole world in a joint statement.
Prepared to crown the 40th anniversary of the original game, this ambitious remake aims to convey the historical Saxon-Norman conflict to a whole new generation of players. Graphics modernized with advanced visual technologies, completely overhauled fluid mechanics, and an innovative roguelite game mode added for the first time to the series are set to solidify this historical masterpiece’s place in the modern gaming industry.
Both Nostalgia and Innovation Come Together with Three Different Game Modes. This special production, which will be released simultaneously for the Computer (Steam, GOG), Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms, contains three different main modes that will appeal to players of all styles. Prepared for nostalgia enthusiasts, “Retro Mode” offers the opportunity to experience the iconic Amiga version with its original dynamics.
“Classic Mode”, on the other hand, preserves the spirit of the game and serves as a current revival blended with a modern visual identity and smooth mechanics. Bringing a brand new breath to the series, “Kingdom Mode” offers a roguelite deck-building experience with a dice-based battle system, set in the fascinating atmosphere of the Defender of the Crown universe. In order to unite the kingdom under one banner, players will have to fight across the map, facing bandits, rebels and Norman forces while also making strategic moves to defeat three vicious enemy lords hiding in their own castles.
Strategic Deck Building and Dynamic Dice Battles The deepening battle mechanics of the production perfectly combine tactical deck building logic with dice dynamics based on luck and strategy. The quality and quantity of military units in your army directly determine your starting dice and overall score on the battlefield, while the tactical cards you play each turn allow you to turn the tide of battle in your favor. New dice types, ancient relics and additional mechanics that unlock as you progress through the campaign take the encounters to a much deeper strategic dimension.
During each game round, you can explore points of interest on the map, participate in jousting tournaments, rescue captured Saxon ladies, launch raids to plunder gold, or besiege castles to weaken enemy armies. Although the geographical locations of the regions on the map remain constant, the events and enemy interactions you will encounter there are completely random in each new game. It will be on the shelves in August.
Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns, which has created great excitement in the gaming world, will make its global debut on August 13. Combining classic strategy dynamics with modern rogue-lite elements, this production has already been added to wish lists in Steam and GOG stores on the PC platform, and in the official Xbox and PlayStation digital stores on the console side. This magnificent production, which will both refresh the memories of old generation players and offer a tactical challenge to new generation players, seems to be a candidate to be one of the most remarkable strategy games of the summer season.
