During the Arab Spring that started in March 2011, the events that started with the harsh suppression of anti-government protests in Syria quickly turned into a civil war. The conflict, which turned into an armed rebellion over time, turned into a multi-sided and complex civil war. While the civil war, which lasted for more than 11 years, ended after the former President of Syria, Bashar Assad, left the country, the interim government that took office began working to restore social and political stability in the country.

THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA After the end of the civil war in Syria, commercial relations between Türkiye and Syria began to return to normal over time. Akçakale Customs Gate, which was actively used before the civil war and provided passage to Syria, was reopened after 12 years, creating great excitement in the regional economy. It was learned that after the customs gate was reopened to passport holders, approximately 700 trucks and nearly 2000 passengers a day passed through here and entered Syria.

It was stated that this development would make a positive contribution to both the Turkish and Syrian economies. Experts stated that commercial activity will increase, especially in regional provinces such as Şanlıurfa, Mardin, Gaziantep and Adıyaman, and economic cooperation between the two countries will be strengthened. He also stated that the reopening of Akçakale Customs Gate after 12 years is the beginning of a new era.
