The European Union continues its efforts to end the use of disposable sauce and sugar packages, which are widely used in restaurants and cafes in Turkey. With the new regulation prepared within the scope of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, offering products such as ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard and sugar in disposable packages will become a thing of the past. IT WILL ENTER INTO EFFECT ON AUGUST 12. While the change in question is expected to come into force on August 12, disposable sauce and sugar packages left on the tables in restaurants, cafes and hotels across the European Union will be stopped.
Refillable glass bottles and reusable containers will be used instead of these products. Authorities point out that such packaging, which has a very short lifespan, creates a significant amount of waste. It is stated that the regulation to be implemented aims to reduce the use of plastic and enable businesses to switch to more sustainable service systems. VALID ONLY IN RESTAURANTS, CAFES AND HOTELS According to EU data, the packaging in question constitutes approximately 40 percent of plastic use throughout the union.
It was stated that the new regulation will only be valid in restaurants, hotels and cafes, and disposable packages will continue to be used for takeaway and home delivery orders. It was also learned that disposable packages will continue to be used in hospitals and some health institutions for hygiene reasons.
