China-based automotive manufacturer SAIC Motor decided to establish its first European production facility for the MG brand in Spain. The company’s investment will be realized in the Galicia region, located in the northwest of the country. The planned facility is intended to host both production and logistics activities. Production Will Start in 2028 According to the planning, the construction process of the factory will start in 2027 after obtaining the necessary permits.
The facility is expected to start production by 2028. While it is planned to invest approximately 200 million euros in the first stage, additional investments will be put into operation with the increase in capacity in the following periods. Annual Capacity of 120 Thousand Vehicles is Targeted. Once the factory to be established in Spain reaches full capacity, it is aimed to produce approximately 120 thousand vehicles annually.
A significant part of the production is expected to consist of electric and hybrid models. The facility is expected to contribute to the regional economy and create direct employment for approximately 1,000 people. It was also stated that the local supply chain will be actively used in the production process. The European Union’s decision to impose additional customs duties on electric vehicles originating from China directs manufacturers to produce within Europe.
SAIC Motor’s investment in Spain is also considered as a part of this strategy.
