Sony announced God of War Laufey, the new game of the God of War series, at the State of Play event. Developed by Santa Monica Studio, the production is being prepared for PlayStation 5 as the new main game of the series. In the new game, Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, takes the center of the story under the name Laufey. A release date for God of War Laufey has not been announced. God of War Laufey tells about Faye’s journey after death.
God of War Laufey begins with Faye waking up in a foreign land after her funeral. Faye learns that her previous plans to protect Kratos and Atreus are in danger. The story is about Faye’s struggle to protect her loved ones in Everywhen, the afterlife realm of the gods. Everywhen was introduced in the God of War universe as a transcendent land where magic is born and eventually returns. In this region, gods and creatures from different mythologies exist in the same universe.
Among the gods Faye will encounter are Sekhmet and Begtse. These two characters were shown among the names that were hostile towards Faye in the promotion. Faye was one of the main characters of the story in the Scandinavian period of God of War. In God of War and God of War Ragnarök, the character’s legacy played a central role in Kratos and Atreus’ journey. With God of War Laufey, Faye appears before the players directly as the main character for the first time.
Santa Monica Studio does not treat Faye only as Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother. The character is described as a warrior and one of the leaders of the Jötunheim giants. Faye’s influence on the Nine Realms dates back to before she met Kratos. In the new God of War, the battle system changes according to Faye. God of War Laufey adds the feeling of movement and fluidity of the Greek period games of the series to the modern God of War battle system.
Faye was designed as a more agile character who can move seamlessly on the ground and in the air. The fight tempo is based on speed, control and successive attacks. Faye is described as the Golden Hand of the Jötnar. One of the character’s strengths is his connection with spirits. After coming to Everywhen, these soul-based abilities become stronger. Faye can separate the souls of enemies from their bodies with her golden palm.
Then, she can attack this spirit directly or throw the spirit at other enemies. Faye’s use of weapons in the game is also related to the history of the series. Faye was known as the previous owner of the Leviathan Axe. After reaching Everywhen in God of War Laufey, he wields a powerful sword guarded by Rue. Rue is introduced as a magical ribbon guardian voiced by Perlina Lau. Faye doesn’t go it alone in Everywhen. The game also includes a cosmic cube called Phranque.
Phranque, voiced by Jack Quaid, is described as a companion who wants to protect his friends and the creatures of Everywhen. Deborah Ann Woll returns to the role of Faye after God of War Ragnarök. In God of War Laufey, Faye will encounter gods, creatures from different mythologies and beings unique to Everywhen. A huge, six-legged cat that can float in the air was also seen in the trailer. The world of the game departs from the Scandinavian period of God of War and opens up to a wider area between mythologies.
Sony announced that God of War Laufey can be added to the wish list on PlayStation Store. Price, exact release date and PC version information for the game were not shared. Only the PlayStation 5 version was included in the announcement.
