Well, everyone, today, with the invitation of Paribucineverse, I went to the press screening of the movie Michael and watched it. The movie was generally pretty good, and I’ll be honest, it was more enjoyable than I expected. The rhythm and tempo were so high that we never got bored for nearly 2 hours. The energy of the hall did not drop even for a moment, the scenes were connected to each other so fluidly that they passed by with “continue, continue” in between.
They assimilated Michael so well (in this time period), especially Jaafar Jackson, that he was perfect from head to toe. His appearance, his walk, his voice, his facial expressions, even those characteristic hand movements… The man has literally resurrected Michael Jackson. The acting was generally excellent, and everyone in the supporting roles filled their roles very well. There is no need to even explain the decor, make-up, costumes etc., they are all at the highest level, you cannot take your eyes off.
The harmony of stage and music is a separate event. It’s like an exact replica, especially when those iconic pieces enter, the atmosphere of the hall changes instantly and you get goosebumps. The director had previously used the same style in Bohemian Rhapsody, so we were expecting this as well; He placed the parts into the film so naturally that it feels like we are watching the real Michael’s life in his own role. The music scenes are literally at their peak throughout the movie: Billie Jean, Bad, Thriller…
When they enter, the hall literally feels like it’s about to stand up, the energy is at its peak. Especially when you watch it in IMAX, wow, everything is taken to a whole different dimension with the sound system and the giant screen, you literally feel every beat inside you. The Beat It stage was also legendary, but I thought to myself, “I wish we could see Eddie Van Halen with that famous Frankenstrat guitar.” Watching that legendary guitar solo live would be completely different.
But of course there are cons, I won’t hide them either. They dragged on the events with his father for a long time, at times we understand that the man is hated by everyone from the bad belt scene and it’s as if the other brothers shot this movie because of the father’s wishes. The movie tells about a very short period of time, I don’t understand why they chose this way. It seemed a little lacking to me that they chose such a narrow section during such a rich period of Michael’s career.
The individual characters are well developed, but Michael’s relationship with his siblings is almost non-existent. We don’t know anything, those connections are left completely empty, although if they had at least deepened it a little more, the movie would have been much fuller. Since they chose short term, there is almost no political message; I honestly wish I could see more songs like “They Don’t Care About Us” and make those messages hit stronger.
Personally, I didn’t like the shooting angles and direction very much. Constantly zooming in on his face, close-up after close-up… It’s like a Turkish drama movie, what is that? I wish it had been shot a little more cinematically, with wider angles. But I have no words for the cinematography, they did a great job in that regard; The lights, the colors, each frame is like a separate painting. All in all, it was an enjoyable, high-energy Michael Jackson experience.
Just living that legend again with Jaafar was enough for me. Despite its shortcomings, I left the cinema happy and I recommend it. Thank you again to Paribucineverse.
