ISTANBUL (AA) – “Istanbul Digital Art Festival (IDAF)”, organized for the sixth time this year with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, opened its doors with the theme “RETELL (Retell)”. Speaking at the opening program held at the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) of the festival, of which Anadolu Agency is the Global Communication Partner, Festival Director Dr. Nabat Garakhanova thanked those who supported the festival, curators and the festival team.
Garakhanova stated that they are trying to artistically develop the festival, which was held for the sixth time this year with 70 artists, and said, “We started an academic literature study at the Istanbul Digital Art Festival. This year we will hold the symposium, and from now on we want to strengthen its academic literature with an academic symposium every year. Because digital art is not just a screenshot, floating images, but actually the processing of serious information and data in the background.” he said.
Pointing out that there are different works in the festival, Garakhanova said, “The better we process the data in the current algorithms, the more beautiful works will be produced. There are very different works of 70 valuable artists here.” Therefore, visitors will have very serious experiences for 5 days.” made his assessment. – “We are faced with a very strong driving force” Mustafa Serdar Duran, Vice President of the Digital Art Association (DİSAD), stated that he was very pleased to meet the future of technology and art and said, “As the Digital Art Association, we have had a purpose since the first day we were established; To handle new generation technologies with a human-oriented vision and to blend these opportunities with our deep-rooted cultural heritage.
Thus, we want to place our country in a leading position in the cultural digital art world. “In line with this goal, we have been accompanying this journey of the Istanbul Digital Art Festival since the first day.” he said. Stating that he is proud to be a stakeholder and supporter of the festival, Duran said, “This year, the theme of RETELL is at the center of the festival. This theme fully reflects the innovative philosophy that we, as an association, emphasize meticulously.
Today, digital transformation does not just mean producing new codes or algorithms. We are now faced with a very powerful driving force that is shaping global business practices, social life and cultural industries from top to bottom. “At this point, the importance of digital art and its place in our lives become much clearer.” he said. – “Mathematics is one of the basic building blocks of science and art” Yıldız Technical University Vice Rector Prof.
Dr. Ahmet Göksel Ağargün also said: “As a mathematician, taking the floor at such an important event at the intersection of art and science has a special meaning for me. Although mathematics is often seen as an abstract discipline, it is actually one of the most basic building blocks of both science and art. “Mathematics, which enables us to understand the order, rhythm and ratio in nature, today plays a decisive role in the algorithmic structure of digital art, visual production techniques and artificial intelligence-based investment processes.” he said.
Pointing out that traces of mathematical thought are clearly seen in the images produced with artificial intelligence, Ağargün said, “Especially mathematical concepts such as data, probability, geometry and algorithm open new areas of expression for artists and take the aesthetic experience to different dimensions. “Art production in the digital age is not only a technical process, but also a reflection of an intellectual transformation.” shared his opinion.
– “Artificial intelligence is in every aspect of life” Mayor of Sultangazi, Abdurrahman Dursun, stated that they support digital art as a municipality and said, “Some people asked us why a municipality would get involved in this business. But it is necessary to catch up with life. Maybe you expressed it today as RETELL, but we are going through a period where life is changing and renewing. “We are in a process where digital art, the digital world and artificial intelligence surround every aspect of our lives.” he said.
Stating that revival works should be carried out not only in zoning and construction, but also in the field of culture, art and education, Dursun said, “Within this framework, we started with this 6 years ago, but we are also carrying out very strong cultural works in our own district. But a lot has changed in the 6 years between digital art and artificial intelligence. “Artificial intelligence has become indispensable in every aspect of life and technology, and this process is also in terms of art.” he said.
After the speeches, the festival team and speakers took a souvenir photo together. The program ended with the performance of “Kondüktör Mekteb-i Alisi Cereyanlı Music Committee”, in which the music technology students of Yıldız Technical University Faculty of Art and Design Department of Music brought together music, technology and real-time visual design. – About the Festival Within the scope of the festival, current productions of digital art, artificial intelligence-supported practices and innovative approaches in the field of new media are presented to art lovers.
The festival, which also includes AA’s productive art project called “Those Destroyed by Will”, which questions how memory and testimony are transformed by machines by dehumanizing and reproducing documentary news photographs with special artificial intelligence software, will continue until June 7. The curator staff of the festival, which brings together 70 artists from different countries of the world as well as Turkey in Istanbul, includes Evgeniya Romanidi, Gonzalo Herrero Delicado, Burcu Öztürkler, Ozan Turkkan, İsmail Erim Gülaçtı and artificial intelligence curator Avind.
On the other hand, various panels are organized at the festival with the participation of international speakers and experts. The festival, where talks will be held on topics such as global circulation and local memory in digital art, also hosts technology-focused workshops prepared for children and young people. Applied trainings on “from upcycling to digital art”, “from play dough to digital art”, “machine learning”, digital illustration with virtual reality (VR), animation with artificial intelligence and in-game costume design will also be held at the event.
