MS patients and doctors came together at an awareness event

ISTANBUL (AA) – An event was organized at Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Training and Research Hospital with the participation of patients and doctors to raise awareness of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) disease.

ISTANBUL (AA) – An event was organized at Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Training and Research Hospital with the participation of patients and doctors to raise awareness of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) disease. At the event held in the conference hall of the hospital’s chief physician’s office within the scope of “World MS Day”, doctors evaluated the current status of MS disease and developments in its treatment, while patients talked about the attacks they experienced and their coping methods.

Giving information about the disease, Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Training and Research Hospital Neurology Clinic Chief Assoc. Dr. Mesrure Köseoğlu said that there are 3 million MS patients in the world and around 80 thousand in Turkey. Pointing out that awareness about MS is increasing, Köseoğlu stated that MS is not only the disease of that individual, but also the process experienced by the society. Köseoğlu stated that they attach great importance to such meetings, especially with individuals and families with MS, to raise awareness and that they aim to repeat the events several times a year.

Stating that individuals with MS can continue their lives normally, successfully and productively when they are diagnosed early and follow their treatment properly, Köseoğlu said, “MS is a chronic and progressive disease. The process of acceptance and struggle is also difficult. My patients first experience a shock period after being diagnosed with MS. Then the depression process begins. While some patients overcome these in a short time, others can continue for many years.” he said.

Köseoğlu explained that they saw positive progress in patients with MS who accepted the situation and moved to the fighting phase. – Special treatment method for each patient, Dr. from Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Training and Research Hospital Neurology Clinic. Faculty Member Mehmet Demir noted that MS is a disease that occurs as a result of the immune system attacking the cells in the central nervous system. Stating that around 3 thousand patients are followed up and treated in the hospital, Demir said that a special treatment method is applied to each patient.

Demir explained that they recommend vitamin D supplements and a Mediterranean type diet to patients, adding that they should not smoke or drink alcohol, avoid stress and exercise. Sinan Akşit, one of the patients, stated that he has been living with MS since 1999 and that he was diagnosed with MS after his tests and tests when he started seeing double while playing tennis. Akşit, who is also a specialist doctor at the hospital’s urology clinic, stated that he has been living his life without any problems for 26 years with regular follow-up and treatments.
