It was reported that at least 90 people died in the gas explosion that occurred in the Liushenyu coal mine in Shanxi province, northern China. According to information in Chinese state media, there were 247 workers in the mine at the time of the incident. It was announced that the explosion occurred in the mine in the city of Changzhi on Friday evening local time. According to initial findings, many workers were removed from underground, while more than 100 people were treated in hospitals.

The Chinese Ministry of Emergency Management announced that a total of 345 personnel from six different rescue teams were dispatched to the region. It was stated that rescue efforts continued under difficult conditions due to the structure of the mine. It was stated that the steep slope and limited transportation facilities at the mine entrance slowed down operations. Authorities found that carbon monoxide levels in the mine exceeded safety limits after the explosion.

While no official statement was made about the exact cause of the incident, it was noted that technical investigations were continuing. Chinese President Xi Jinping demanded that all means be used to treat the injured and find the missing. In addition, the causes of the accident were instructed to be investigated in detail and those who were negligent to be held accountable within the scope of the legal process. According to state media, some executives of the company operating the mine were detained as part of the investigation.

Shanxi province is known as one of China’s largest coal production centers. The region has a significant share in the country’s total coal production. Although safety standards have increased in recent years, mining accidents continue to come to the fore in the country from time to time.
