The indictment prepared against former football player Ümit Karan came to the fore. It was learned that Karan, who was detained within the scope of the operation held at Sabiha Gökçen Airport on January 14, 2026, will be tried in the high criminal court on the charge of “drug trafficking”, with a request for up to 10 years in prison. It was stated that the course of the investigation changed when the statements of Karan’s ex-girlfriend were included in the file.
It was stated that the records in the file, witness statements and interviews deepened the investigation. COCAINE WAS DETECTED IN BLOOD AND URINE SAMPLES Ümit Karan denied all the accusations in his statement at the prosecutor’s office and claimed that people he had known for years suddenly tried to portray him as a drug dealer. In his defense, Karan said, “I fell into this situation because of the unfounded allegations of my boyfriend of 2 months.” In the Forensic Medicine Institute examinations carried out at the end of January, it was determined that cocaine was found in the former football player’s blood and urine samples.
It was stated that the statements given by Karan’s ex-girlfriend Şule Naz Öztürk were one of the most important factors that changed the course of the case. Öztürk claimed that while she was with Karan, the former football player offered her drugs and used cocaine during this period without paying any fee. UP TO 10 YEARS OF PRISON IS REQUESTED Another witness, Elif Özdemir, claimed that the former football player used drugs in a place, went to another place after receiving the news of the police raid, and gave some substances to people he did not know from small bags in his pocket.
It was stated that technical evidence, as well as witness statements, strengthened the prosecution’s hand. In the phone transcripts received from the Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) and HTS analysis, it was determined that Ümit Karan and Şule Naz Öztürk gave signals from the same base station a total of 6 times on different dates and times. In the indictment prepared, the prosecutor’s office claimed that the former football player gave the drugs to Öztürk at three different times and committed the crime in a chain manner.
The prosecutor’s office requested a prison sentence of up to 10 years for Ümit Karan, whose trial will begin at the Istanbul High Criminal Court in the coming days.
