As you know, the development of the gaming industry in the 90s was dominated by fighting and action games. Marvel’s iconic heroes also got serial games in these years and achieved cult status. Marvel Maximum Collection presents 6 productions from this period with small touches. First of all, let me clarify a situation for myself; I’m not someone who can play over-aged, clumsy-controlled productions over and over again just because they’re classics.
Don’t think I’m a nostalgic fan, I still play the 1991 The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past a lot. I’m talking about games that have aged “badly” here. If I say that I did not approach the Marvel Maximum Collection cautiously with this idea swirling around in my mind, I would be a Zeus, no lie. This special package includes 6 Marvel classics. Except for minor touches on some of them, the games have been left as they are, and all the burden is placed on your sense of nostalgia.
The star of Marvel Maximum Collection is X-Men: The Arcade Game because it is gifted with online capability. Despite its age, X-Men is still a crazy game, the action is chaotic and fast-paced. It is very important that such a dynamic was even considered at that time, well done to the production team who may have bonded with the grandparents now. X-Men: The Arcade Game offers both online support and allows you to team up with up to 6 players.
No joke, you can dive into this chaos together as a whole team. Fighting Colossus as a 6-player team is still incredibly fun (it must be, unfortunately I couldn’t try it). The controls are also very enjoyable, the action does not get stuck and stumble. Shall we continue? Everyone’s favorite hero, Spider-Man, is on the list with three games. Spider-Man/Venom: Maximum Carnage, Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety and Spider-Man/X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge are the three games of Marvel Maximum Collection with strong spider sense.
As you can see, Spidey is not a solo game, he takes someone with him in each one. Unfortunately, Maximum Carnage is a very average production; If you talk about the story, it is weak, the action is overwhelmed by the colorful visuals and the repetitive action is entertaining to a certain extent. Moreover, you can only play as one person. The biggest problem of the old Spider-Man games is that the character’s web-swinging dynamics cannot be provided due to technical limitations.
This is an “incomplete” spider that does nothing other than run, punch and kick, attract the enemy and some specially designed climbing sections. Separation Anxiety is an average pleasure due to similar restrictions, but it manages to kick it into high gear with the support of two players. The biggest problem here is that the game is terribly repetitive. Spider and Venom came together, the potential was great, but it was obviously wasted in the hands of the producers who were a little lazy even at that time.
However, you will definitely be confused by the colorful episode designs, it does not look like a mediocre production. Spider-Man/X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge, the third spider of the Marvel Maximum Collection, is a very interesting game. Different sections have been designed to keep the gameplay fresh. When you consider the episode with Wolverine’s toy and the action-packed scene where Cyclops uses his special power, you will clearly understand what I mean.
Even though Spider-Man went a bit haywire in this game, I have to say that it is tighter than the other two productions. What bothered me was the controls; Their reactions are both weak and cumbersome. Moreover, it is easier to die in this game than in others. In a game where you can die cheaply and have the potential to go crazy, you inevitably wish that the controls should be good. Captain America and The Avengers is one of the handsome men of the Maximum Collection.
It doesn’t have the visual language, action and online support that X-Men: The Arcade Game offers, but our captain is not empty-handed either. Captain America and The Avengers has its own tone and narrative language. This is an original language for the 90s. Moreover, many surprise characters from the Marvel universe suddenly enter and exit the story, creating pleasant moments. The fact that they have made dozens of location changes to spice up the action will also extend your playing time.
Let’s talk about Silver Surfer, the weakest link of the Marvel Maximum Collection. The silver surfer who teleported from the NES to the present is already a character in the shadows. His game is just like him, I’ll be honest. The difficulty of the game has been legendary since the day it was released. Since I experienced it for the first time, I was able to test whether this bad reputation was true. Yes, Silver Surfer is unnecessarily difficult.
From Software, hear this bro! The difficulty here is not organic, you cannot dodge it with the right reflexes and timing. This is a strange structure that forces you to die suddenly, makes you repeat this 3-4 times, and then softens. Deliberate cruelty might be the thing that annoys me the most in games. Moreover, the action and level designs are mediocre. Although it has a structure that is different from the others in terms of style, where you aim by flying, it cannot use its difference at all.
If it suits this collection, I would seriously discuss it if there are fans. Marvel MaXimum Collection is a journey into the past, but it’s a journey that stumbles at times. X-Men: The Arcade Game is the clear star of the pack. She has aged like Monica Bellucci (I showed my weak belly), her action and controls are on point. It truly shines with its online support and the ability to do this for up to 6 players. Captain America also plays a good role, but the rest is just a pleasant memory.
Spider-Man games may keep you busy for a while, but I don’t know if they will go beyond that. No, Silver Surfer, you’re not even on our radar. Marvel MaXimum Collection is a neat and clean package for nostalgia lovers who still have coins left in their pockets. It’s sure to stay on your screen for a while, but it’s not strong enough to stay on your screen all year long. As we always say; The choice is entirely yours.
Marvel Maximum Collection Review Visuality – 8 Content – 7 Playability – 7.5 7.5 Those who love nostalgia and say they cannot live without coins should come and add this special package to their archives immediately. It’s okay as long as you don’t overestimate your expectations!
