ISTANBUL (AA) – The Compost Production Center established within the Beykoz Glass and Crystal Museum under the management of the Presidency of National Palaces was introduced. Thanks to the project in which vegetal waste is recycled to the soil, promoted by the Presidency of National Palaces within the scope of Zero Waste Week, organic waste from palaces, pavilions, mansions and museum gardens will be converted into natural fertilizer and used in green areas.

While leaves, grass, branch pieces, wild herbs and various plant materials will be evaluated in the studies, the water used in compost production will be provided from rainwater collected on the field. Making a statement to journalists about the center, Palace Gardens Branch Manager Dr. Emine Atalay Seçen said that they make compost by grinding the weeds, mowed grass and dry tree branches from the fields. Stating that the idea of the project emerged about 2.5 years ago, Seçen said: “It is a simple system that can be done with just a bucket and water.” We use nitrogen factors such as dry leaves, wood shavings, grass waste, bird, sheep and goat manure.

Our hot compost is ready in approximately 2 months, and our cold compost is ready in 1 year. he said. Seçen stated that after the compost was ready, they examined the status of beneficial microorganisms in it under a microscope. Explaining that they started to use it in the field when it turned into a good compost that did not contain any harmful organisms, Seçen said: “After sifting the compost we obtained, we mix some of it into the soil in a way that does not see light and use it for planting plants.” We obtain an extract from the other part with very gentle movements.

We apply this extract by spraying it on the leaves of the plants while watering them. In other words, we can say that it is a much more natural and efficient version of the liquid fertilizers on the market. We produce at least 3 tons of compost annually in this center alone. he said. Seçen said that the compost center, which is about to be completed in Edirne Palace, will be opened next year.
