A new statement for Discord, which has been inaccessible in Turkey since October 9, 2024, came from the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Uraloğlu. He said that the platform meets the criteria required by Turkey, especially in terms of content creation. In the statement, no clear date was given for the reopening of Discord’s access, but it was stated that the process was discussed with the relevant ministries and institutions.
The expected statement for Discord came. Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu evaluated the latest situation of Discord, which has access restrictions in Turkey. Speaking on the question in the live broadcast, Uraloğlu stated that the platform has made progress in the criteria that Turkey expects. The main topic in Minister Uraloğlu’s statement was the content creation process. Uraloğlu said that Discord has reached the criteria that Turkey wants, especially in terms of content removal.
Stating that the process is being discussed with the relevant ministries and institutions to reopen the platform for access, Uraloğlu said, “We are talking about opening it after a while. We will probably open it after a while.” An official opening date has not been shared for Discord at this stage. The statement from the Ministry revealed that inter-institutional evaluation is continuing to remove the access barrier.
The final decision to open the platform to access is expected to be clarified after the completion of the relevant processes. Access to Discord was blocked in Turkey on October 9, 2024. The decision was taken by the Ankara 1st Criminal Court of Peace and implemented by the Information Technologies and Communication Authority. The legal basis of the process was Article 8/1 of Law No. 5651. The decision to block access included the justification that there was sufficient suspicion that sexual abuse of children and obscenity crimes had been committed.
The decision, taken upon the request of the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, resulted in Discord being blocked from access throughout Turkey. Discord is used as a platform where users can communicate via text message, voice call, video call, screen sharing and server-based communities. Gaming communities, software teams, student groups, content producers and various digital communities come together on the platform via servers.
Direct access to the platform was closed after the access block in Turkey. With the last statement, the content extraction mechanism became the central topic in the conditions sought for the reopening of Discord. In Minister Uraloğlu’s statement, it was stated that the platform has reached the point Turkey wants. Since the opening date has not been announced in the process, users must wait for the official decision on the removal of the access block.
Re-opening of Discord will become clear after the evaluation between relevant ministries and institutions is completed.
