At the International Design Awards (IDA), which is held every year to celebrate and encourage extraordinary design visionaries and to discover promising talents around the world, Continental’s serial tire UltraContact NXT was awarded the “Gold” award in the “Automotive and Transportation / Automobile Accessories” category with its special sidewall design. Containing up to 65 percent renewable, recycled and ISCC Plus mass balance certified materials, UltraContact NXT is the most sustainable tire Continental has ever produced.
A perfect coordination of design and technology: Ultra Contact NXT
Continental Tires Industrial Designer Stefan Rittweger says, “Our design vision was to reflect the sustainability mission of the tire in its appearance. For this, we designed a leaf that symbolizes the forward-looking message of the tire with 3D and depth effects. We achieved this perspective effect for the first time at this point.” However, in the design of UltraContact NXT, form follows function. Rittweger explains this as follows: “The tread, whose technical design has been optimized, increases confidence in the product with its features. Design details such as the soft lines of the cross sections on the edges of the tread block support excellent wear behavior, among other functions. In short, there is a perfect coordination of design and technology.”
Sustainability, safety and best performance
Continental’s new summer tire combines highly renewable, recycled and mass balance certified materials with maximum safety and performance. All available sizes carry the EU tire label for best performance (“A”) in the areas of rolling resistance, wet braking and external noise. Continental works continuously to develop innovative technologies and sustainable products and services throughout the entire value chain, from sustainable material sourcing to recycling end-of-life tires. The premium tire manufacturer aims to use more than 40 percent renewable and recycled materials in its tire products by 2030. UltraContact NXT represents an important step for the brand to achieve these ambitious sustainability goals and become the most progressive tire manufacturer, as stated in the Vision 2030 strategy program.
