There is a supply shortage in the Core Series 3 and Core Ultra Series 3 processors that Intel introduced to the market with the 18A production process. Laptop manufacturers are struggling to get enough chip shipments for new models based on Panther Lake and Wildcat Lake. Intel, on the other hand, announced that its 18A-based Series 3 products are in full production, production efficiency has been increased and factory output is arranged according to customer needs.
Supply alert for Intel’s new processors. Intel’s Core Series 3 and Core Ultra Series 3 family are among the new era processors that the company has built on the 18A production process. Core Ultra Series 3 came to the laptop side with the code name Panther Lake. The Core Series 3 family includes Wildcat Lake-based models. Both product groups were among the first important steps that brought Intel’s new generation production process to consumer computers.
According to information from industry sources, major PC brands, small laptop manufacturers and system builders cannot receive sufficient supply of Panther Lake and Wildcat Lake processors. Although manufacturers exhibited their new models based on these processors at Computex Taipei, they are having difficulty getting a clear schedule on the shipment side. This situation especially affects the product plans of brands that offer their new generation laptops with Series 3 processors.
Intel announced Core Ultra Series 3 processors at CES 2026. According to the company’s official statement, pre-orders for the first consumer laptops started on January 6, 2026, and global sales opened on January 27, 2026. Intel announced that the Series 3 family will power more than 200 PC designs, and additional models will hit the market during the first half of the year. The Core Ultra Series 3 family also includes Core Ultra X9 and X7 class models.
High-end models have up to 16 CPU cores, 12 Xe cores and NPU performance up to 50 TOPS. According to the data announced by Intel, these processors offer an increase of up to 60 percent in multi-threading performance and up to 77 percent in gaming performance compared to the previous generation. The company also shared up to 27 hours of battery life data on certain reference systems. It is stated that the supply shortage is not limited to Intel’s own 18A production.
Although Intel 18A is used on the processing unit side of the new processors, external production partners such as TSMC are used for some additional chip components. Therefore, the pressure on the production chain depends on Intel’s own factories as well as external supply capacity. On the older generation processors side, the picture is more complicated. Alder Lake and Raptor Lake are based on the Intel 7 manufacturing process.
On the Arrow Lake and Lunar Lake side, there are components connected to TSMC’s N3 class production processes. According to industry sources, Intel informed PC manufacturers that additional allocations for older generation processors would be limited and brought forward the transition to new 18A-based processors. This transition required manufacturers to shift their product range to Series 3-based models in a short time.
Intel also has a new product group using the 18A process on the data center side. Xeon 6 processors, codenamed Clearwater Forest, are among Intel’s first 18A-based server processors. This series was introduced with up to 288 E-core cores and high-density data center design. The use of the same production process on both the client and server sides brought the 18A capacity to a critical point in Intel’s 2026 road map.
Intel manager Alex Katouzian said in a statement in Taipei that there was a “some” shortage in the supply of Panther Lake and Wildcat Lake and stated that the company was working to overcome this situation. In a later statement from Intel, it was stated that 18A-based Series 3 products were in full production, production efficiencies were improved, and factory output was optimized according to customer needs in the face of strong demand.
For PC manufacturers, the problem is not limited to just waiting for chips. The transition to a new processor family requires revalidation of motherboard design, power management, cooling structure, display options and other components. While some manufacturers produce lower-cost models with older generation processors, the Series 3 platform highlights newer and more expensive laptop designs. The 18A process for Intel has been at the center of the production leadership debate against TSMC in recent years.
The company brought the same production technology to the market in consumer computers with Panther Lake and in data centers with Clearwater Forest. The problem in the supply of Series 3 entered the agenda of the technology sector as the first major production test of this new era.
