ADANA (AA) – The price per kilogram of the geographically indicated registered watermelon in the field, where harvesting is continuing in Adana, decreased from 25 lira to 18 lira. The harvest of the watermelon, which is registered with the name of the city where it is grown, continues last month. The products collected by agricultural workers from the fields in Aydınlar District of Karataş district are sent domestically and abroad.
The price per kilogram of watermelon, which was 25 lira at the beginning of the harvest, decreased to 18 lira as the crop increased. – “Demand from abroad has increased significantly” Adana Agricultural Platform Spokesperson Cahit İncefikir told the AA correspondent that the harvest will continue throughout the summer. Stating that watermelon is planted on approximately 110 thousand decares in the city, İncefikir stated that they expect more than 800 thousand tons of harvest this year.
İncefikir stated that Adana watermelon is one of the sweetest watermelons in Turkey in terms of aroma and said, “Especially in recent years, the demand for Adana watermelon from abroad has increased significantly. The reason for this is that our watermelons are really beautiful in taste, color and aroma. We export watermelons to Russia, countries in Europe and the Middle East, starting from Iraq. There is serious demand there.” he said.
Watermelon producer Kadir Çelik said, “This year, the yield of our products is a little better than last year. We are sending watermelons all over Turkey.” he said. Can Kocakaplan, a broker from Kayseri, stated that the demand for Adana watermelon is high and said, “This year, the tonnage is a little better than last year. There is no substitute for Adana watermelon in Turkey. We finished Antalya watermelon and came here.
Adana watermelon is more delicious and sweet because it grows in the open and receives direct sunlight.” he said.
