KAHRAMANMARAŞ (AA) – A garlic harvest event was held in Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaraş. Kahramanmaraş Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Fırat Görgel, in his speech at the event held in Nefsidoğanlı District, stated that Kahramanmaraş ranks third in garlic production in Turkey. Stating that Kahramanmaraş has fertile lands, Görgel said, “We are making a name for ourselves as a city in agricultural production. Our 384 farmers produce 17 thousand tons of garlic annually in an area of 11 thousand decares.

80 percent of the production is carried out in Pazarcık district, and 20 percent is carried out in Afşin, Elbistan and Onikişubat districts. he said. Görgel stated that efforts to register Pazarcık garlic with a geographical indication are continuing and said: We think that we will get good results in the registration of Pazarcık garlic. We have 31 geographically marked products in our city. Çağlayancerit walnut, Maraş bun and Maraş tarhana are among our products registered by the European Union.

As the Metropolitan Municipality, we started the registration process of our 50 new products. We will continue to protect every product of our city with all our stakeholders. These products form the identities of our city. We will take our city to a much better point in terms of geographically indicated products. After the speech, the participants of the program harvested the garlic field. Pazarcık District Governor Hulusi Teke, Pazarcık Mayor Haydar İkizler, Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Ramazan Bilir, producers and citizens attended the event.
