ERZURUM (AA) – TEVHİD FURKAN RIVER – Approximately 600 tons of waste collected daily in the recycling and energy production facilities established within the scope of zero waste studies in Erzurum are brought into the economy. With the projects implemented by Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality in recent years, recycling materials and electrical energy are obtained from the waste collected throughout the city. The waste collected in the city is first brought to separation facilities.
Here, approximately 18 tons of packaging waste such as plastic, paper, cardboard and metal are separated daily and sent to relevant factories for recycling. Non-recyclable waste is used to generate electricity from methane gas formed in landfills. Metropolitan Municipality Environmental Protection and Control Department Head Ömer Fark Avcı told the AA reporter that they continue their zero waste efforts in line with the Zero Waste Project carried out under the auspices of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s wife, Emine Erdoğan.
Stating that both the packaging sorting facility and the facilities for converting garbage into electricity operate, Avcı said: As the Metropolitan Municipality, we separate approximately 3 percent of the 600 tons of waste collected daily in the city center and districts as plastic, cardboard, waste and packaging waste. We produce electricity by converting the remaining waste into methane gas without harming the environment.
he said. – The street lamps of the district are lit with the energy produced from garbage. Stating that the work is carried out with daily collection and separation operations, Avcı said: We separate the plastic, cardboard and other packaging wastes coming to our facility and all the materials that are recycled. We ensure that the materials we separate are reused by sending them to factories in various regions of Türkiye.
We produce approximately 1050 megawatt hours of electricity monthly from garbage in our electricity production facility. We cover the electricity consumption of all the street lamps of our Aziziye region from here. The whole world reached a common opinion on the environment. The whole world has started to work towards this goal in order to leave a better environment for future generations. We are also making preparations for this in our city.
Here, we not only recycle waste, but also contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Avcı emphasized that they act with the motto of environmentally friendly municipalities and that significant investments have been made in this field, especially in the last 3 years. Explaining that they carried out the zero waste mobilization together with the citizens, Avcı noted that as the Metropolitan Municipality, awareness-raising activities such as competitions, mobile phone applications and poster works were organized, and added: “We are trying not only to fight as a municipality, but also to fight against both environmental pollutants and bad images together with all our people.
