AMASYA (AA) – Harvest season has started in Amasya, one of Turkey’s important onion production centers. A ceremony was held to mark the start of the harvest season in Amasya, which was the largest producer after Ankara in Turkey, with 437 thousand 802 tons of onion production last year. Governor Önder Bakan, in his speech at the program held in Oluz village, said that 65 thousand decares of onion was produced in Amasya this year.
Stating that seasonal agricultural workers work hard for the onion harvest, the Minister said, “We are here in the harvest of early onions. The onion that comes to mind when Amasya is mentioned is very valuable here. As of last year, Turkey is second in the amount of onions produced. Onion was planted on a total of 89 thousand decares of land, and the yield was around 437 thousand tons. This year, this planting area decreased to 65 thousand decares, but our expectation will be a yield close to that again.” he said.
Onion producer Celalettin Çelik said, “We have started harvesting, our yield is very good, our prices are normal. We are expecting a very good year this year.” he said. Onion harvest in Amasya is expected to continue until September.
