STOCKHOLM (AA) – Reactions were made to Israel’s attacks on Palestine and Lebanon in Sweden’s capital Stockholm. Demonstrators came together in Odenplan Square upon the call of many non-governmental organizations. Demonstrators marched towards the city center with Palestinian, Iranian and Lebanese flags and carried banners and signs saying “Stop the Genocide”, “Stop the attacks on Palestine and Lebanon” and “Fascist Israel”.

The demonstrators chanted slogans: Genocidal Israel, Israel is a terrorist state, Israel kills children and Stop the Genocide. In her statement to AA correspondent, Swedish activist Matilda Bergström, who supported the demonstration, drew attention to the humanitarian drama experienced by mothers and children in Gaza and called on the international community and the European Union (EU) to give up their hypocritical policies.

Emphasizing that mothers in Palestine struggle to survive under very harsh conditions, Bergström said: In occupied and conflict-ridden Palestine, mothers witness the death, maiming or disappearance of their children before their eyes. Mothers are forced to give birth without any medical help or health support. Due to Israel’s restrictions, even the most basic needs such as baby food and substitute milk cannot be accessed.

Those of us living in Sweden, which has the most advanced parental rights and free healthcare in the world, need to be at the forefront of showing solidarity with Palestinian mothers who are deprived of these opportunities. Bergström argues that colonialism and the economic interests of big companies lie behind global conflicts and said, “There is a structure that makes big money from wars, weapons and violating human rights.” Human rights are not invoked because they prevent these companies from making profits.

These forces are strong enough to silence the media and influence politicians. We, as citizens, must now take responsibility and object loudly to this trend. he said. – It is a clear double standard. Bergström also criticized the European Union’s attitude in foreign policy and stated that although there are politicians within the EU who support Palestine, concrete steps are constantly blocked. Bergström noted: It is a clear double standard that the EU stands behind Ukraine and provides all kinds of support to it, while not standing by the Palestinians.

There are many politicians in the EU Parliament who demand support for Palestine and the suspension of trade agreements, but these decisions cannot pass a vote. It is impossible not to think that there are some interests and financial ties behind the countries that constantly brake and hinder this process. China, the African Union and the EU need to take a clearer stance against these unlawful partnerships of global powers.
