Shield AI announced that it has been selected by the US Navy to bid for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) service contracts worth up to $800 million. According to a statement from the company, this development allows Shield AI to participate in the contractor-owned and contractor-operated ISR services program to support maritime and joint force operations. The company, which will compete with other defense industry companies selected for work orders within the scope of the program, announced that it will offer the V-BAT unmanned aerial vehicle system to provide uninterrupted ISR capabilities.
The system stands out as a Group 3 vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) platform designed to operate in contested operating environments. V-BAT has a duct type fan design and offers an air retention time of over 12 hours. The platform also has the ability to operate from ships and locations in harsh conditions without the need for launch or recovery equipment. The system is currently used by US forces, deployed in both naval and land operations.
These include the US Coast Guard and the US Marine Corps. Company officials stated that the system is designed to work in environments where GPS and communication signals may be interrupted and provides uninterrupted surveillance with limited logistics requirements.
