HULL (AA) – Hull City, which was promoted to the Premier League by beating Middlesbrough 1-0 in the English Championship play-off final, celebrated its historical success with its fans. The players, technical staff, managers and their families gathered at the MKM Stadium, where Hull City plays their matches, took a city tour in open-top buses and met with tens of thousands of fans gathered in front of the City Hall. It was noteworthy that the fans who filled the square shared the enthusiasm with many Turkish flags as well as Hull City flags.
In his speech to the fans, Turkish businessman Acun Ilıcalı, the owner of the club, said, “I came to this beautiful city 4 years ago. My dream was to have a big family. As soon as I came here, I saw you. There were 6-7 clubs, but I came here, I felt the energy. I said to myself ‘this club will be my club’. We became a big family. All the problems we encountered made us stronger. I love you all very much. Are we the richest club: no.
Are we the most expensive team: no. But we had the best fans and we did it.” he said. Coach Sergej Jakirovic, while addressing the fans, said with a humorous approach: “I had a mission before the season, to keep the team in the Championship. I failed. We went to the Premier League.” he said.
