History and Legacy of an Anime Legend The original series, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino in 1979, takes place in a future called the “Universal Century” where people migrate to space colonies due to overpopulation. The story focuses on the relentless war between the Principality of Zeon and the World Federation, which want to declare their independence.
The giant humanoid robots used in this war, namely “Mobile Suits”, stand out as the most important elements that changed the course of the war. Gundam has gone beyond being just a cartoon series to a massive cultural phenomenon that has spanned 83 different animated series and movies. Even today, decades after its creation, the brand’s toys and figures continue to generate annual revenues of over $600 million.
