Snake Plissken, one of the most charismatic anti-heroes of the cinema world, is preparing to return to the big screen with a modern touch, and according to the latest news from the studio, the Escape From New York remake has officially entered the development phase within StudioCanal. Partnering with The Picture Company, the studio rolled up its sleeves to bring John Carpenter’s 1981 cult science fiction classic to today’s audience.
For fans of the dystopian action genre, this project has been talked about in Hollywood backstage for a long time, but this is the first time it has gained such concrete and serious momentum. The Legend Created by John Carpenter and Kurt Russell The original film took the audience to a dark and gloomy version of 1997 when it was released in 1981. In the story, the entire island of Manhattan has been converted into a massive maximum security prison.
When the plane carrying the President of the United States crashed into this dangerous area, Snake Plissken, a former soldier and prisoner, was assigned to save him. Portrayed by Kurt Russell, Plissken has become one of the most iconic figures of genre cinema with his single eyepatch, sarcastic attitude and anti-system stance. John Carpenter expanded this universe with “Escape from LA” in 1996. In this sequel, the bar was raised even higher and Los Angeles was depicted as an autonomous island from which unwanted people were deported.
Plissken was called upon by the government again, this time to bring back a doomsday device. A Challenging Production Process and a New Vision It has actually been quite a bumpy journey for this new remake project to come to this day. A few years ago, the directing team known as “Radio Silence” and “Saw” series creator Leigh Whannell were working on a “requel” under the umbrella of 20th Century Studios. However, this version was shelved for unclear reasons and the project fell into silence for a while.
With StudioCanal taking over the project, it is stated that the production is not a continuation story, but a completely “reimagining” project. This approach offers the opportunity to bring a fresh perspective to the character of Snake Plissken and the Manhattan prison, while also having the potential to remain faithful to the raw and minimalist energy of the original film. It is a matter of curiosity how modern visual effects and today’s political atmosphere will be integrated into this dystopian world-building.
Names That Fans Are Eagerly Awaiting: Carpenter and Russell The biggest mystery of the project focuses on the participation of the original team. In an interview in 2019, John Carpenter said that he believed there were more stories to be told with Snake Plissken. However, it is not yet clear whether the master director will take part in this new project as a consultant or producer. The same goes for Kurt Russell. Russell returning to the project in any capacity would immediately excite longtime fans, but there has been no official casting announcement at this time.
While revisiting a cult production is always a risky choice, the dystopian world-building and anti-authoritarian stance still have a strong resonance today. How StudioCanal will manage one of the most valuable properties in science fiction history will be closely followed by the entire cinema world. Source: Collider
