Four agreements were signed between Japan and Australia to strengthen cooperation in the fields of energy, defense and critical minerals. According to ABC News, Japanese Prime Minister Takaiçi Sanae and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met in Canberra. After the meeting, the two leaders signed 4 agreements to strengthen cooperation in the fields of energy, critical minerals and defense. Within the scope of the agreements, it was stated that the parties will share information in “emergency economic situations”, including geopolitical tensions, economic pressures and disruptions in the markets, and “countermeasures will be evaluated” if their security is threatened.
The two leaders discussed the developments in the Indo-Pacific region, especially China and North Korea, and the effects of the war in the Middle East on energy markets. Prime Minister Albanese said, “Our friendship has never been stronger. In this time of increasing uncertainty, strong partnerships are more important than ever.” he said. Albanese said that the new agreements signed between the two countries will help ensure Australia’s energy and economic security.
Prime Minister Takaiçi stated that Japan and Australia will remain in close contact and will respond to the energy crisis originating from the Middle East “with a sense of urgency”. Pointing out that the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz has serious effects on the Indo-Pacific region, Takaiçi noted that consultations between the two countries should continue on this issue.
