Ankara 36th Regional Court of Justice declared the 38th Ordinary Congress of the CHP held on 4-5 November 2023 as legally invalid with the decision of “absolute nullity”. In the court decision, it was stated that the congress in question, as well as all ordinary and extraordinary congresses held since that date, were also cancelled. The case was based on an application filed by former Hatay Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Lütfü Savaş and a group of delegates.
Claiming that the 38th Congress was held irregularly, the plaintiffs demanded the dismissal of Chairman Özgür Özel and the members of the Central Executive Board, Party Assembly and High Disciplinary Board. In the same petition, it was requested that Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and the previous boards, who were in office before the congress, be reinstated. KILIÇDAROĞLU IS RETURNING Allegations of irregularities against the congress were previously included in the scope of investigation by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The decision announced by the court today has reignited the power debate within the CHP. If the decision is implemented, Özgür Özel’s chairmanship will end and the party’s management will actually return to the Kılıçdaroğlu period.
