In the English Championship play-off semi-finals, Southampton defeated Middlesbrough, which it hosted at home, 2-1 with a goal in extra time and advanced to the final. With this result, Hull City and Southampton were matched in the final to be played for the Premier League ticket. The rematch of the semi-final series, the first match of which ended goalless, was played at St Mary’s Stadium. Middlesbrough started the match effectively and took the lead with Riley McGree’s goal in the 5th minute.
The home team equalized the score with the goal scored by Ross Stewart in the extra time of the first half. In the second half, neither team could find the leading goal and the match went into extra time. Southampton took the advantage with the goal scored by Charles in the 116th minute. The score did not change in the remaining minutes and the British team became the party that got the ticket to the final. Hull City, owned by Acun Ilıcalı, had already made its way to the final by eliminating Millwall in the semi-finals.
Hull City-Southampton will face each other in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, May 23. The winning team will have the right to compete in the Premier League next season.
