Türkiye is experiencing the rainiest period of the last 66 years. OMU Faculty of Agriculture Lecturer Prof. Dr. Yusuf Demir announced that, according to the data of the General Directorate of Meteorology, precipitation has increased by approximately 80 percent in the last 6 months compared to the same period last year. Stating that the precipitation is approximately % more than in the 2025 water year, Demir said that currently the precipitation that should fall in a month fell in an hour and flash floods occurred.
ARE REGIONAL WARS BEHIND THE RAIN? Prof. Dr. Demir explained that there are three main reasons behind these record rainfalls: heat waves over the Mediterranean, the variability of jet streams in the atmosphere, and the transition period between El Nino and La Nina. He also emphasized that the claims circulating on social media that “there are regional wars behind the rains” have no scientific basis. Making important warnings for the summer months, Demir stated that they expect extreme heat, sweltering days and the risk of drought, especially in July, August and September.
However, he added that floods may occur from time to time due to sudden heavy rains in places such as the Black Sea Region. He said that dam occupancy rates have reached very high levels with the current rainfall, but water resources should be used carefully due to summer drought.
