ANKARA (AA) – A panel titled “Turkmen Governor Period in Kirkuk and Turkmen Representation in Iraq” was organized by the Middle East Research Center (ORSAM). Kirkuk Governor and Iraqi Turkmen Front President Mehmet Seman Ağa attended the panel held at ORSAM headquarters and moderated by ORSAM President Kadir Temiz as a speaker. Regarding the election of a Turkmen governor in Kirkuk, Ağa stated that, as Turkmens, they have been exposed to the assimilation policy for 100 years, and said, “We stood up and fought.
As Turkmens, we did not take part in the disintegration of Iraq or any disintegration projects. On the contrary, we became the cement of Iraq. In Turkmeneli, we ensured the brotherhood and unity of Iraq by binding the two sides between the Kurds and Arabs.” he said. Stating that Turkmens have always thought about the unity of Iraq, Ağa said, “In our contacts in Baghdad, we emphasized that Turkmens are the essential element in Kirkuk.
Turkmens never followed a policy with the aim of dividing the country, on the contrary, we welcomed everyone, whether Sunni, Shiite, Kurdish or Arab. We stated that we prioritize unity and solidarity with the support of Turkey. “We, as Turkmens, have never been ashamed of carrying the Iraqi identity and we carry it with pride.” he said. Mehmet Seman Ağa pointed out that many things have changed in Iraq and stated that the weapons in Iraq should be in the hands of the state and everyone should be treated equally.
“We became a bridge between the capital Baghdad and Ankara.” Ağa said that Turkey helped them with the water issue after their meetings with Türkiye. Reminding that Arabs and Kurds had previously served as governors in Kirkuk, Ağa said, “No equation without Turkmens can be successful in Kirkuk because we are the main owners of Kirkuk.” he said. Ağa stated that Turkey has always emphasized the territorial integrity of Iraq and helped the Turkmens in Iraq to avoid being victimized, and that they want to ensure peace and brotherhood in Kirkuk.
Mehmet Seman Ağa continued his words as follows: “Our main goal is to make peace, tranquility and brotherhood permanent in Kirkuk. At the same time, we aim to establish the rotating governorship model as an institutional system in Kirkuk. Because the peace of Kirkuk is the stability of Iraq, and the stability of Iraq is the peace and stability of the Middle East.” Ağa stated that the previous governors provided various services, but no real service was provided in Kirkuk, and services were lacking in different sectors.
Stating that they are working to protect Kirkuk internationally, Ağa stated that they want to benefit from the Union of Turkish World Municipalities. Stating that he has good relations with Baghdad, Ağa said, “The Development Road Project is vital for Iraq.” He stated that they will contribute to the Development Road Project if other plans they consider are implemented. Mehmet Seman Ağa: “The Iraqi officials we met told us, ‘Ministry will be given to the Turkmen Front, not the Turkmens.'” he said.
