KOCAELİ (AA) – KADİR YILDIZ – Kocaeli wants to achieve its 100 percent advanced biological treatment target with the commissioning of two facilities that are undergoing transformation at the end of 2027. Advanced biological treatment facilities not only reduce environmental impacts, but also contribute to the sustainable management of water resources. Increasing the quality of water treated with this method helps maintain the ecological balance in the receiving environment.

In Kocaeli, where investments to protect the environment and water resources continue, 73 percent of wastewater is cleaned with advanced biological treatment methods. While efforts continue to transform two of the 23 treatment facilities in the city into a more advanced biological treatment system, it is aimed to switch to 100 percent advanced biological treatment in the city by the end of 2027. Thus, it is aimed to discharge purified water to receiving environments at higher standards.

The studies reached 47 percent in the Yeniköy facility and 24 percent in the Körfez facility. – By the end of 2025, we have treated and discharged 177 million 500 thousand tons of wastewater. Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewage Administration (ISU) Wastewater Treatment Department Head Faruk Nazik told the AA reporter that there are 23 wastewater treatment facilities in Kocaeli, 21 of which have advanced biological treatment and the others have biological treatment.

Stating that they treated and discharged 177 million 500 thousand tons of wastewater in the city by the end of 2025, Nazik noted that they also disposed of the sludge formed as a result of treatment in licensed institutions. Nazik stated that they provided the final disposal of 118 thousand 500 tons of sewage sludge last year, and the entire wastewater treatment facility system in Kocaeli is purified with biological processes.

There is no pretreatment or physical treatment. 73 percent of the city’s wastewater is treated in advanced biological processes. The remaining 27 percent is purified in biological processes. he said. – Wastewater is used in industry, green area irrigation and road washing. Nazik stated that they made tenders for the capacity increase and revision of 2 facilities with biological treatment in 2025, and that the construction is continuing, and that the capacity of the converted Gulf facility will be increased by 126 percent and converted to advanced biological method.

Stating that there will be a 156 percent capacity increase in the Yeniköy facility, Nazik said, “When we complete these two facilities, we will purify all of the wastewater in Kocaeli by passing it through advanced biological processes.” We aim to be the first province to provide 100 percent advanced biological treatment by the end of 2027. Thus, a significant contribution will be made to the protection of the Marmara Sea, natural water resources and environmental ecosystem.

he said. Nazik stated that they aimed to recycle wastewater and use it in industry after the drought in 2014, and noted that they have recovered 153 million 560 thousand cubic meters of water so far from these facilities they commissioned in 2015. Stating that these waters are used in industry, green area irrigation and road washing, Nazik added that this figure corresponds to 3 Yuvacık Dams that are full.
