New Adventure Time Series “Side Quests” Announced!

Adventure Time, one of the universes of the animation world with a modern and deep lore, continues to expand.

Adventure Time, one of the universes of the animation world with a modern and deep lore, continues to expand. With the Fionna and Cake series, the series deviated in a much more mature, dark direction and focused on character psychology, but this time it goes completely the opposite way, back to where everything started. Cartoon Network Studios officially announced the “Adventure Time: Side Quests” animated series, which will focus on Finn and Jake’s independent childhood adventures.

However, this announcement created a big question mark among fans who follow the series closely and witnessed the growth of the universe. Let’s take a closer look at all the details and why this new project brings both great excitement and serious concerns.” What Will “Side Quests” Tell? As the name suggests, this new production will focus on the pure, carefree days around the first two seasons, when Finn and Jake were still children/teenagers, instead of big epic stories that last for seasons.

In the anthology format series, which will consist of single-episode, independent (procedural) adventures; An immature Finn who dreams of heroism, monster hunts, dungeon explorations and classic Land of Ooo absurdities will be at the forefront, but keep in mind that for some reason they emphasized the dungeon exploration part. The name behind the series is Nate Cash, an Emmy award-winning animator who has worked wonders on the original series and works such as Steven Universe.

Big Question Marks: How Right Is It to Repeat the Same Thing? Although the news seems enjoyable at first glance, it carries some structural risks for the communities that examine the Adventure Time universe season by season and admire its depth: Pendleton Ward Factor: Pendleton Ward, the genius of the universe, is not at the helm of the project. How satisfying could a job done just “for old times’ sake” be without his nevian, philosophical and absurd vision?

Simplified Childlike Drawing Style: Early leaked information and concept indicate that the drawing style will be in a simplified style, closer to today’s children’s animations, rather than the artistic aesthetic of the final seasons of the original series. This can weaken visual depth. Resetting Character Development: We watched Finn grow, lose his arm, mature, and the tragic past of the Land of Ooo, and became attached to this universe.

Now resetting everything and watching “side quests” that don’t connect to anything can feel like a step backwards in terms of storytelling. The Other Side of the Coin: The Regular Show Example Gives Hope So, will everything be so bad? Absolutely not. At this point, a current success story in the world of animation brings joy to our hearts: Regular Show: Lost Tapes. We had similar concerns when Regular Show made a comeback with a similar formula, retrospective and “lost” adventures that did not harm the main story.

However, he managed to surprise us all with the quality of his work and recapture that old, quality spirit with a modern touch. If Side Quests implements Lost Tapes’ formula correctly and fills its simplified visuals with cleverly written dialogues and quality humor, it can revive the “pure entertainment” vein that we miss in the universe. Also Warner Bros. Discovery’s investment in the universe is not limited to this; The TV series “Adventure Time: Hey There Humans”, which will tell the story of people’s return to the Land of Ooo, and a mysterious movie are also on the way.

Note: As a writer who discusses the Adventure Time universe season by season, this news divided me in two as I had just finished reviewing season 9 and was approaching the final season (season 10). Having seen the peak of adult animation with Fionna and Cake, returning to the childish, unaware Finn of the first seasons feels like a commercial move with a bit of nostalgia sauce. However, after seeing the tremendous comeback that Regular Show: Lost Tapes has created, it would be unfair to give full credit to Nate Cash and his team.

Let’s hope that these side quests are not the kind that overshadow the magnificence of the main story, but rather offer pleasant snacks to those who miss the Land of Ooo. What do you think? Do you think returning to the pure and immature atmosphere of the first seasons without Pendleton Ward would damage the Adventure Time spirit, or would it be a missed nostalgia? Let’s discuss in the comments! Note: I will be back with reviews of Regular Show: Lost Tapes and Adventure Time Season 10 very soon, stay tuned!
