ISTANBUL (AA) – Medipol Acıbadem Regional Hospital Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Hüsrev Diktaş stated that inadequately chlorinated pool water poses a great risk, especially for children, of eye, ear and gastrointestinal infections. According to the statement made by the hospital, pools preferred to cool off in the summer months can turn into serious sources of infection if hygiene conditions are not maintained due to inadequate cleaning and chlorination.
Assoc. Prof. whose opinions were included in the statement. Dr. Diktaş emphasized that pools without adequate chlorination pose a risk of infection and said, “Using unclean pools can lead to eye, ear, gastrointestinal and skin infections. Especially eye infections can manifest themselves with redness and discharge.” he said. Diktaş stated that external ear canal infections, which are common in children, may also develop due to pool use.
Drawing attention to gastrointestinal infections caused by pools, Diktaş touched upon the issues that should be taken into consideration when using pools and said: “Symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and fever may occur as a result of swallowing poorly chlorinated water. In these cases, it is especially important to consult a health institution to prevent fluid loss. Pools that are regularly chlorinated and cleaned should be preferred.
If necessary, pool hygiene and chlorination documents should be requested from the authorities.”
