ISTANBUL (AA) – Sports commentator and former referee Erman Toroğlu was acquitted in the case where he was tried for the crime of publicly disseminating misleading information due to his statements about Galatasaray on the television channel. Defendant Erman Toroğlu and his lawyers, as well as representatives of Galatasaray Sports Club and Galatasaray Sportif Sınai veticaret Yatırımlar AŞ, attended the hearing at the Istanbul 58th Criminal Court of First Instance.

Making his defense at the hearing, Toroğlu said that he did not understand why he was in court. Toroğlu, defending against the opinion, said: “Let my acquittal be decided.” he said.

Announcing its decision in the case, the court ruled that the defendant be acquitted because the act charged upon him was not defined as a crime in the law. – From the indictment In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, Galatasaray Sports Club, Galatasaray Sportif Sınai ve Adım Yatırımlar AŞ were listed as complainants and Erman Toroğlu was listed as a suspect. In the indictment, it was stated that an investigation was launched for the crime of publicly disseminating misleading information to the public regarding the statements that Galatasaray Club President Dursun Özbek and Turkish Football Federation (TFF) President İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu met on a television channel Toroğlu attended on February 8 and that some issues were discussed in this meeting.

It was stated in the indictment that the defendant tried to mislead the public, create perception, and negatively affect the trust in the institutions and organs of the state with untrue information about public order, apart from the statements made by the institutions and bodies of the state regarding football, which is closely followed by the public. In the indictment, it was stated that Toroğlu acted with the intention of creating anxiety, fear or panic among the public, and that the element of publicity was created because his action could be seen by many people.

Toroğlu was requested to be imprisoned from 1 to 3 years for the crime of publicly spreading misleading information.
