One of the most popular piracy and heroism-themed productions in the world of tabletop role-playing games is being completely renewed for modern players with the 7th Sea 3rd Edition project announced by French independent publisher Studio Agate. This iconic game, created by John Wick and which has been at the top of the “swashbuckling” genre for years, is stepping into a new era with the licensing rights inherited from Chaosium.
The campaign, launched on Kickstarter, proved how eagerly awaited the project was by collecting more than £300,000 from thousands of supporters in its first days. The World of Théah Moves Forward Ten Years With the new edition, the timeline of the continent of Théah, where the game takes place, is moved forward ten years. During this ten-year period, geopolitical balances changed, new conspiracies sprouted and old enmities gave way to more complex political intrigues.
Studio Agate states that although the mechanics have been completely overhauled, all the books of the second edition will remain valid as a rich source of information, location guide and character repository. Thus, old players will be able to easily integrate the library they have into this new era. Cinematic Action and Risk-Oriented New System 7th Sea 3rd Edition positions the player as the leading actor of an action movie, rather than an anonymous adventurer.
The aim is to create an atmosphere where your decisions can overthrow rulers, thwart the plans of secret societies and prevent international wars. The new dice system of the game is inspired by the classic “Roll and Keep” logic and is based on the use of two different colored ten-sided dice (d10). While players roll “Action Dice” to determine what their hero has accomplished, they use “Wound Dice” to measure how much they paid in the process.
This distinction is designed to encourage players to take risks and achieve “success with style.” The mechanical structure directly rewards bold, cinematic maneuvers rather than punishing them. New Paths That Set the Tone of the Game Knowing that every game group is looking for a different atmosphere, the developers have introduced three different “Paths” that allow Game Masters (GM) to adjust the feel of their adventures: Path of the Goddess: Puts supernatural elements, wizards, gods and extraordinary creatures at the center of the story.
Path of Intrigue: Focuses on conspiracies, moral dilemmas, and a darker, more adult atmosphere. Path of Progress: It draws a route of discovery where scientific innovations, the changing world and ancient Syrneth artifacts are at the forefront. Supporter Rewards and Future Vision The campaign offers a wide range of reward options, from digital collections to limited edition collection boxes with “Montaigne” covers. From basic rulebook packs starting at 40 Euros to collectible boxes containing special resin dice and metal hero points worth 240 Euros, there is an option to suit every budget.
The game, which is in open development, is planned to be delivered in June 2027. The Kickstarter campaign, which will continue until Friday, April 10, 2026, offers role-playing game enthusiasts the opportunity to write their own legends in the wavy waters of Théah. 🎲 Try your luck, see what happens!
