Heavy rains that have been continuing for days in the southern and central parts of China have brought floods and landslides in many provinces. According to official statements, at least 10 people lost their lives due to heavy rains in the Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi, Chongqing and Guizhou regions. The China Meteorological Administration announced that over 100 millimeters of rainfall was measured in some settlements in 48 hours. It was reported that the amount of precipitation that fell in a short time in many districts of Hubei province exceeded local records. According to meteorological data, it was stated that the rains affected a wide geography and spread over an area of approximately 1,000 kilometers. Loss of Life and Evacuations: 6 people lost their lives when a vehicle was dragged into an overflowing river due to heavy rains in the Guangxi region.
It was announced that 3 people lost their lives in sudden floods in Hubei and there was one loss of life in Hunan. Many roads, schools and public services were temporarily closed in disaster areas. Local governments announced that thousands of people were evacuated from at-risk areas. Meteorological Causes Experts stated that excessive rainfall is caused by the combination of moist air masses carried over the Bay of Bengal, South China Sea and Pacific Ocean.
It was stated that due to the slow-moving weather system, rainfall was effective in the same regions for a long time. The National Meteorological Center announced that the rainy system will continue to move east and south and new risks may occur, especially in the Yangtze River basin.
