Critical firmware move for Linux from Dell and Lenovo

Dell and Lenovo joined the Linux Vendor Firmware Service project as high-level sponsors, making firmware updates smoother in the Linux ecosystem.

Dell and Lenovo joined the Linux Vendor Firmware Service project as high-level sponsors, making firmware updates smoother in the Linux ecosystem. The two companies were among the first major manufacturers to move to the Premier Sponsors level within the scope of LVFS’s new sustainability process. Dell and Lenovo will support LVFS for Linux firmware updates. Linux Vendor Firmware Service serves as an important infrastructure that enables hardware manufacturers to safely deliver firmware updates to Linux users.

The system allows manufacturers to upload firmware files onto LVFS, and Linux distributions to deliver these updates to the end user through tools such as fwupd, fwupdmgr and GNOME Software. With this development, Dell and Lenovo took part in the top sponsor category of LVFS. In LVFS’s current sponsor structure, Framework Computer and Open Source Firmware Foundation are among the entry-level sponsors. Linux Foundation and Red Hat are among the institutions that provide engineering support to the project.

According to the statement made by LVFS, the project has distributed more than 145 million firmware updates to date. These updates have reached millions of Linux devices with firmware packages from more than 100 different manufacturers. Dell and Lenovo’s support at this level comes after the two brands have been offering firmware updates on Linux devices via LVFS and fwupd for a long time. Firmware updates, especially on the laptop, desktop system and corporate hardware side, are critical for closing security vulnerabilities, increasing device stability and ensuring healthier functioning of hardware components.

For Linux users, this infrastructure enables operations such as BIOS or UEFI updates to be carried out without relying solely on Windows tools. Thanks to LVFS, firmware updates on supported devices can be viewed and applied directly in the Linux environment. This brings significant ease of use, especially for users who use Linux as the main operating system. With the growth of LVFS, the long-term sustainability of the project has become more important.

On the project side, it was previously announced that financial support or code contribution was expected from major manufacturers. Dell and Lenovo’s participation in high-level sponsorship was one of the most remarkable steps that followed this call. In the sponsor structure of LVFS, the Premier Sponsors level is positioned as the top category that contributes to financing the maintenance and growth of the project. According to the information provided by Phoronix, the annual fee of this level is 100 thousand dollars.

Dell and Lenovo’s move to this category reveals that firmware distribution on the Linux side relies not only on community support but also on the direct contribution of major hardware manufacturers.
