Damen Shipyards Group launched the Multi-Purpose Ship (MPV 10720) NRP D. João II, which it built for the Portuguese Navy, with a ceremony.
The ship was launched at Damen’s Galați shipyard in Romania. MPV 10720 design; It is based on the concept of a multi-functional platform capable of performing a wide range of missions such as maritime surveillance, oceanographic research, environmental monitoring, humanitarian assistance and disaster response.
Designed to operate in different climatic conditions, the ship has a high level of system autonomy.
The project, whose contract was signed in 2024, received financing from the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Fund within the scope of the NextGenerationEU program.
NRP D. João II is planned to enter full operational service following sea acceptance in late 2026.
