Following the revision in its electric vehicle strategy, Honda accelerated its hybrid car development efforts. The company announced that it is working on a new generation sedan and SUV model that is planned to be available for sale in 2028. It was stated that the sedan model that will carry the Honda brand and the SUV with the Acura logo will be produced with the brand’s new hybrid power system. It was reported that the prototype vehicles introduced at the business briefing organized by the company had designs close to mass production.
While the wedge-shaped sedan model was seen to have a sporty silhouette, it was stated that the Acura SUV reflected the brand’s current design lines. New Hybrid System Aims for Higher Efficiency The new generation hybrid system developed by Honda is aimed to provide an efficiency increase of more than 10 percent compared to the current technology used in 2023. It has been reported that the new models developed especially for the North American market will feature an electric motor-assisted four-wheel drive system.
The company also announced that it is working on a lighter platform. In addition to reducing fuel consumption, the new infrastructure is planned to reduce production costs by over 30 percent. Target for 15 New Hybrid Models by 2030 Honda plans to launch a total of 15 models using the new hybrid power unit by March 2030. It was noted that a significant portion of these vehicles will be sold in the US market. It was stated that sedan models will continue to be included in the product planning, where the SUV segment will dominate.
It was announced that the company will invest approximately 4.4 trillion yen in gasoline and hybrid vehicle development processes in the next three years. In addition, it was shared that investments in electric vehicle projects will not end completely and that a budget of approximately 0.8 trillion yen has been allocated for future EV models. Change in Electric Vehicle Plans Honda has recently canceled some electric vehicle projects.
It was stated that the previously announced 0 Sedan, 0 SUV and Acura RSX models were removed from the production plans. It was reported that some Afeela models developed jointly with Sony were among the canceled projects. While hybrid technologies have become a priority in the company’s new strategy, it was stated that electric vehicle studies will continue in a controlled manner in different markets. It was noted that Honda will continue to sell electric vehicles in various regions, especially Japan and Asia.
