Istanbul hosts the 17th ITS European Congress, one of the most important smart transportation events in Europe. The congress, organized under the leadership of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and hosted by ISBAK, brought together more than 3 thousand participants from 50 countries in Istanbul. The event, organized with the theme of “Being a Bridge to Innovation: Integrated, Safe and Uninterrupted Mobility”, discussed artificial intelligence-supported traffic management, digital twin technologies, integrated transportation systems and sustainable mobility solutions.

Istanbul Stepped on the Global Stage in Smart Transportation, hosting 34 million daily movements and approximately 2 million journeys between two continents. Istanbul stands out as one of the most complex cities in the world in terms of transportation management. This dense structure also turns the city into a large testing ground for smart transportation technologies. Ömer Fatih Sayan, ERTICO CEO Joost Vantomme, ITS Europe President Angelos Amditis and European Union Delegation Representative to Turkey Jurgis Vilcinskas attended. In the opening speeches, Istanbul’s smart transportation vision, digitalization capacity and real-time data-based management systems were emphasized. It was stated that the city’s multi-modal transportation structure offers an exemplary model on a global scale in the field of mobility.

IMM Deputy Chairman Nuri Aslan stated that transportation management in Istanbul with a population of 16 million is now shaped not only by physical infrastructure but also by data and technology. Aslan said that Istanbul is a multi-layered city where millions of people, products and information move every day. According to Aslan, the way to manage such a dense city structure is through an information-based, technology-supported and innovative approach.

Smart city technologies; It plays a critical role in making cities more livable with data-based decision-making, integrated transportation networks and sustainable mobility solutions. At the congress, it was pointed out that the transportation sector has a significant share in terms of carbon emissions, and it was emphasized that cleaner and more efficient transportation systems are no longer a choice, but a responsibility towards future generations.

Joost Vantomme, CEO of ERTICO, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, drew attention to the importance of public and private sector collaborations in the development of smart transportation systems. Vantomme said that Istanbul is a city that builds bridges not only geographically but also in terms of cooperation and technology. Vantomme stated that there could not be a more suitable place than Istanbul for collaborations that shape the future of mobility, and stated that the congress offers an important platform for trust, cooperation and common goals beyond physical and digital bridges.

Within the scope of the ITS European Congress, many topics that will determine the future of intelligent transportation systems are discussed.
