McLaren 765LT: Recalled Due to Rear Window Problem

McLaren 765LT recalled due to rear window issue. This is considered as a measure taken to ensure security standards. The safety of our customers is always our priority.

McLaren 765LT Recall Announcement

McLaren has identified a serious problem with certain 765LT models and has therefore decided to initiate a recall. The problem relates to the fact that the rear window of the vehicle can detach from the vehicle in certain conditions, endangering other drivers in traffic. It is stated that only 163 vehicles were included in the recall report and all of these vehicles were produced in 2020. Additionally, all of these models are standard versions with a metal roof.

Fixing the polycarbonate rear glass at the factory with a strong adhesive may cause the rear glass to separate from the vehicle if this adhesive loses its properties over time. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) recall documents included warranty claims from vehicle owners who reported rattling noises coming from the rear of the cabin. In detailed examinations, it was determined that this sound was caused by the partial separation of the glass from the frame, and in some vehicles, the glass was completely separated.

Tests and Findings

Although the McLaren 765LT failed to reproduce the damage suffered by the adhesive in laboratory tests, it was discovered that the effectiveness of this adhesive decreased as a result of tests carried out on race tracks at high speeds. Driving at high speeds, especially when the side windows are open, can create a pressure that exceeds the strength of the adhesive. It should be noted that although some racetracks require the windows to be closed, these rules do not apply everywhere around the world.

Solutions and Recommendations

To solve this problem, McLaren plans to fix the rear window more strongly to the carbon frame with physical fasteners. Until this solution is implemented, 765LT owners are advised not to exceed the 150 km/h speed limit with the windows open. Vehicle owners who do not want to miss track days can contact dealers and have additional adhesive added to the rear window; However, this cannot be considered a permanent solution.
