The guide published by Microsoft for Windows 11 gaming computers quickly became a topic of discussion due to the statement 32 GB RAM. In the guide, 16 GB RAM is positioned as a practical starting point, while 32 GB RAM is described as a worry-free upgrade for those who use Discord, browser or streaming tools while gaming. Following the reactions, the relevant page was removed from publication and the link now directs to the Windows Learning Center home page.
Why did the statement 32 GB RAM in the Windows 11 gaming guide become a hot topic? Microsoft’s removed guide was a content explaining which hardware features stand out in gaming computers using Windows 11. The section on the RAM side was at the center of the debate. It is stated in the text that 16 GB RAM is a practical starting point for most players, while 32 GB RAM offers a more comfortable space for those who use Discord, browser or streaming tools with the game.
In the same section, 16 GB RAM was mentioned as the entry level and 32 GB RAM was mentioned as a worry-free upgrade. This does not mean that the official system requirements of Windows 11 have changed. The minimum RAM requirement on Microsoft’s current Windows 11 system requirements page is still 4 GB. The same table also includes conditions such as 64 GB or larger storage space, TPM 2.0, UEFI Secure Boot and DirectX 12 compatible graphics card.
So 32 GB RAM is not an official requirement for Windows 11 installation. The language used was effective in the growth of the debate. Because 32 GB RAM can provide a more comfortable experience, especially with new generation games, applications open in the background, streaming tools, browser tabs and voice chat software. However, Microsoft’s positioning of this as a “no worries” level attracted the reaction of users at a time when RAM prices were under pressure.
There is also a striking difference between Microsoft’s official requirements and the new generation Windows device strategy. While the minimum RAM requirement for Windows 11 remains 4 GB, Copilot PC class devices have 16 GB DDR5 or LPDDR5 RAM, 256 GB SSD / UFS storage and NPU over 40 TOPS. For this reason, the 32 GB RAM debate was evaluated not only on gaming performance but also on Windows’ new hardware expectations.
The removed guide is not the first controversial hardware guidance that Microsoft has made for gaming computers. In another previously published Learning Center content, it was stated that 16 GB RAM is sufficient for most games, while 32 GB RAM is ideal for heavier games and mod usage.
