The prices of pistachios, one of the most important agricultural products in terms of production and consumption in Turkey, continue to rise. While the costs of many items, especially energy and agricultural products, are increasing, especially after the war in the Middle East and Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the prices of pistachios and indirectly baklava are also affected by this situation. In addition, the decrease in yield, adverse climatic conditions, increase in demand and changes in market balances lead to an increase in prices.
Experts state that pistachios have entered a period known as the “dead year”, and that in such years the productivity of pistachio trees decreases and, accordingly, production drops significantly. Producers also state that they have produced less product this year compared to previous years, and this is causing a supply problem in the market. NEW INCREASES MAY COME While peanut prices are increasing rapidly with the decrease in supply, sharp price increases in types such as peanut kernels and pistachios for baklava draw attention.
The rise in peanut prices also directly affects the prices of baklava and confectionery, and it is stated that new price increases may be on the agenda for these products. Producers say that they do not expect prices to decline in the short term due to increased costs and decreased supply, on the contrary, a new wave of price increases may occur in the market. MANY REASONS LEAD TO THE INCREASE Experts point out that pistachios are an extremely important agricultural product for the country’s economy and emphasize that this product has a high export potential and has an important place in the world market.
However, both the military tension in the Middle East and production fluctuations due to climate change negatively affect the production and price stability of pistachios. For this reason, it is stated that the price increases are not only a temporary fluctuation but are also closely related to production conditions. Experts state that the course of prices in the coming period will largely depend on weather conditions and yield.
