DS Performance continues to develop all powertrains of the single-seat DS racing vehicles competing in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship since 2015.
Electrification has been at the heart of DS Automobiles strategy since its founding in 2014. In the same year, DS Automobiles founded DS Performance, its racing arm for motorsport, the best field for accelerating the transfer of technology from the track to the road. In their second season in Formula E, they participated in the championship with a young and dynamic team that included individual manufacturers for the first time.
First generation DS racer
During the first generation Formula E period in 2015, DS Automobiles made a remarkable start to the championship with its fully electric car with a maximum power output of 200 kW, a weight of 920 kg and brake energy recovery capacity. In fact, from the second season onwards, he achieved 4 pole positions, 4 podiums and 1 win. This promising performance continued to strengthen until the end of the fourth season, thanks to the agility of DS Performance, which served as a starting point at that time. The first-generation DS racing car took a total of 16 podiums between 2015 and 2018, representing one trophy in every two races.
Second generation DS racer
DS Performance has achieved a tremendous technological milestone in the fifth season, starting with the second generation Formula E cars. The DS race car, whose efficiency has been increased thanks to more power with 250 kW, a lighter structure with 900 kg and 0 brake energy recovery during braking, under the pilotage of Jean-Eric Vergne, constantly competed in the most difficult places in 2019 and reinforced its success with the first teams and drivers double championship in the history of Formula E. In 2020, the brand repeated this success with António Felix Da Costa at the wheel of the sixth season DS race car, an advanced version of the fifth season car. Despite no championships in the seventh and eighth seasons, DS Performance closed the second generation period with a record number of points and podiums, finishing third in the constructors’ standings and firmly maintaining its place among the leading competitors.
Third generation DS racer
In December 2022, after 2 years of development and an unprecedented mobilization of resources, DS Performance unveiled its third-generation racing car at the Valencia Circuit. The third generation became the fastest and lightest Formula E vehicle in history, reaching a maximum speed of 280 km/h on a street track. The racing vehicle, which is 60 kilograms lighter than the second generation, has become much more efficient with a brake energy recovery capacity of over @. The third generation DS racing vehicle, called DS E-TENSE FE23, can recover stronger brake energy than previous generations. The new unit on the front axle adds 250 kW to the 350 kW braking power on the rear axle and can produce a total of 600 kW braking power with its four regenerative wheels. This value is twice that of the previous generation. This racing vehicle is also the first vehicle without hydraulic rear brakes, thanks to its high electric brake power. Since the start of the ninth season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, the DS E-TENSE FE23 has shown that it can lead its drivers and DS Automobiles to new championships. Buoyed by a victory in Hyderabad, India, on February 11 and a very encouraging second place in Cape Town, South Africa, on February 25, Jean-Eric Vergne, the only double champion in Formula E history, currently sits fourth in the drivers’ standings. The last world champion, Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne, took a magnificent pole position in São Paulo, Brazil, on March 25.
DS Performance, which has been designing and developing the powertrains of DS single-seaters that have been competing in Formula E since 2015, proves to be a true technological leader. Thanks to the experience gained in Formula E, DS Automobiles has definitely accelerated the technology transfer for its E-TENSE vehicles produced for the road. This stands out as an approach that provides significant benefits to the customers of the models that will be included in the 0-electric segment as of 2024.
