The English Football League (EFL) decided to ban the club from the play-off final as a result of the disciplinary process carried out regarding allegations that Southampton recorded the rival team’s training without permission during the Championship play-off process. In the investigation carried out by the EFL, findings were evaluated that Southampton was monitoring and recording the training of some rival teams, especially Middlesbrough, without permission.
As part of the investigation, it was concluded that the club violated the relevant league rules. Following the decision, Middlesbrough was re-included in the play-off final and the matchup was officially updated for the match against Hull City at Wembley. The Club Faces Additional Sanctions The disciplinary decision included sanctions affecting not only the current season but also the next season. It was also decided that Southampton would be penalized with points deducted for the following season.
It was stated that the club violated the regulation in the EFL rules, which prohibits monitoring the training of opposing teams within a certain period of time before the match. Objection Process Started Southampton management started the official objection process following the decision. The club has appealed for the disciplinary commission to reconsider its decision, while EFL sides have initiated work to carry out a rapid appeal process.
It is stated that the play-off final schedule may change again depending on the outcome of the objection. Premier League Goal At Risk The Championship play-off final is considered a match of high economic value in terms of promotion to the Premier League. For clubs, promotion to the Premier League means an increase in revenue of approximately £200 million. For this reason, the decision is considered to be one of the most critical developments of the season, both from a sporting and economic perspective.
Similar Cases are on the Agenda Various sanctions have been imposed on clubs in English football before due to similar violations. In 2019, Leeds United were fined for a breach of monitoring rival team training. In addition, in the past years, various disciplinary decisions have been made in different sports branches regarding the unauthorized acquisition of data and tactical information.
