I started and finished the Superman series with the first movie. This 1978 film is a true classic, iconic and a simple masterpiece. For 2 hours and 23 minutes, there’s no exaggeration, no CGI explosions, just pure cinema magic and Christopher Reeve’s legendary performance. The saying “You’ll believe a man can fly” was not said in vain. You really believe it while watching it, it’s so realistic. Why Iconic and Simple?
The movie doesn’t rush anything. It goes from Krypton to Smallville and then to Metropolis, step by step. It builds the character slowly and makes you feel it. There is no force, no multiverse, no excessive show of power, no ridiculous twists or anything like that. Simple but epic. The flight scenes made with the technology of that time are still among the best. Stringing, practical effects… Even today, your jaw drops when you watch it.
A movie that never gets old. Christopher Reeve and the Actors Reeve’s Superman is a separate piece of art. Clark Kent wears glasses and is hunched over. Suddenly, Superman straightens his shoulders and changes his voice. Those moments of transformation are legendary. His chemistry with Lois Lane also fits well, the romance flows naturally. Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor is the perfect classic villain: Smart, funny, annoying.
Marlon Brando’s Jor-El also adds a short but heavy atmosphere to the film. Flight Scenes and Action The helicopter rescue scene, the night flight with Lois, the race with the train… These went down in cinema history. The music comes on, John Williams’ legendary theme plays… you get goosebumps. There’s action, but it’s understated. There’s romance, but it’s not contrived. It’s all very balanced. Music and Atmosphere John Williams’ soundtrack is half the movie.
When that theme enters, the movie goes to a whole different level. The transition between the heavy, dark atmosphere in the Krypton scenes and the colorful, lively atmosphere in Metropolis is perfect. The movie truly takes you to another world. Conclusion As a Superman fan, I say: This movie is a must-watch. The king of the classics, or as Barış Kıralioğlu puts it, the teacher’s teacher. There is no such clean, pure Superman atmosphere in any modern superhero movie.
Watch it, recommend it to your family, share it with your friends. This is the real Superman.
