Gastronomy platform TasteAtlas published the “World’s Best Tomatoes” list, prepared in line with user evaluations. Ayaş tomato, identified with the Ayaş district of Ankara from Turkey, was also among the top 10 products in the international rankings. While tomato varieties originating from Italy predominate in the list, local products from different countries are also included in the list. Ayaş tomato, representing Turkey, ranked eighth on the list.
Ayaş tomato is among the products registered by the European Union with protected designation of origin (PDO) status. The product stands out due to its unique structural features. Its thin-skinned structure, high water content, fleshy texture and pink-red tones are among the distinguishing features of the Ayaş tomato. The white part seen on the inside of the tomato when cut and the slightly salty aroma resulting from its high acidity are among the characteristic features of the product.
The product, which is frequently preferred on the tables especially in the summer months, is grown by producers around Ankara. Ayaş tomato was included under geographical indication protection by the European Union in 2023. In the statement made by the EU Delegation to Türkiye, it was stated that registration creates an element of trust for both producers and consumers.
