The development process for Apple’s new artificial intelligence-focused AirPods model has reached an advanced stage. It is stated that the design and basic feature set are almost final in the prototypes tested within the company. Instead of offering a classic camera experience, the new headset is positioned as an artificial intelligence device that detects the user’s environment and transfers visual context to Siri. AirPods with cameras will give Siri eyes.
The cameras in the new AirPods model will not be used to take photos or videos. The system will process low-resolution visual information and transfer the objects, environment and context around the user to Siri. Thus, the user will be able to ask Siri questions about an object in front of him, learn what he can cook with the ingredients in his hand, or get more detailed guidance while walking. It is reported that the headphones tested by Apple have a design close to AirPods Pro 3, but the stem section will be longer due to the camera hardware.
A small LED light will be activated while visual data is transmitted to Siri. This detail is important in that it provides a sign that can be noticed from the outside when the camera is active. The product is currently in the design verification testing phase. This stage comes just before production verification testing before mass production. It is also reported that Apple employees actively use the prototypes. This shows that the camera-equipped AirPods project has now left the early concept period behind and has moved to a hardware level approaching production.
The main determining factor in the release schedule of the new model will not be the hardware, but the renewal on the Siri side. It is stated that Apple wanted to launch the product in the first half of 2026, but the calendar was postponed due to the advanced artificial intelligence-supported Siri not being ready. The renewed Siri is expected to arrive in September with iOS 27, macOS 27 and iPadOS 27. For this reason, there is a possibility that the camera-equipped AirPods model will appear on the scene around the same time.
It is not yet clear under what name Apple will launch this headset to the market. It is said that the product may not come directly under the name AirPods Pro 4, but instead may be positioned as AirPods Ultra or an AirPods Pro 3 variant with a camera. At this point, the placement in the product family, the price level and the differences with the existing AirPods Pro series will not be clear until the official launch.
